A popular DIY'er wrote this in her online journal: ""2000-03-19
I started my diy site in late '99. I wanted to cre8 a craft site that would allow me to spend more time on crafting and to have an experience with a business. Now there are 50+ sites out there that try to host diy --some without even a picture to its name. I am frustrated with the lesser quality of some of these sites, I wish people would take more time with them. They weigh the dollar before the dirty work and turn into the trend of the times...cloning. """ I can't say that I don't agree with her. She is absoulutly right. People create them just so they can be trendy & say they have one, then offer pure crap at crazy prices--Ruining the true DIY spirit. For example: www.altern.org/spoff/diy Props to all the good DIY sites out there, who aren't doing it just to do it. Does anyone else have a comment on this topic? Post below-

I totally agree. That's why I haven't started one, not meaning I have not thought about it, or will not do it.... There are just too many. Everyone making one is only gonna make it go out of style faster... am I echoing? IP: Logged |

There are a lot of DIY sites out there, and I wouldn't order from any of them. They all sell the same things, and you could easily make any of the stuff they're selling.IP: Logged |

Yes 2girlgarage is aweomse,i introduced klare there, heehee,im not sure the link, but on the link page here www.panderzinedistro.com youll find them. they are a REAL DIY,it used to be this underground thing, for mostly the riot grrrls, and punks, and now its this trendy bullshit.zines are going that way to,there used to be a scene, and now its just like every other scene,it becomes a trendy thing,it enters the mainstrem by a bunch of trendoids who dont really have the heart for it,just wanna be cool like everyone else, and they destroy the scene, like the punk scne, raver scene, etc, its all destroyed by trendoids coming in and looking at it as a new fashion or some shit, wah.[This message has been edited by lunychik (edited 06-13-2000).] IP: Logged |

yeah, i know what you guys mean. I got into diy, because i really love designing webpages, and i love being creative. i have lots of creative stuff on my site, but no one buys. no offense to cr8tiv cr8tions or howeever you spell it, and sites like it, but i think some of the ideas have definately been overdone. i think sites like that are a eensy overrated. i see links to them everywehre, saying they have an array of ideas and its so original etc...but when i go to them, i dont see much. my diy site is probably not much better, but i think its the fun in creating the stuff that matters to me. even though when no one buys anything! . will someone check it out? www.geocities.com/daftcreations. two girl garage is awesome and so is queenbee creations (http://www.olywa.net/queenbee). ------------------ i am not daft, i am insane. whoa whoa whoa! hol up here. i think that it's awesome that some diy sites have tons of stuff on them, with cool layouts and pictures an' stuff. i mean, ain't it great to know that if you're gonna spend $$$ on something, that the person who made it is really enthusiastic about sellin' some neat stuff? it'd kinda suck if i was like, here, buy my crap. no pics, sorry. just use your imagination. so, for the best results, dearies, i suggest that you put 300% of your effort into something, not just a diy, but into everything that you do. after all, if you're gonna do something, be the best one at it, not just average. by the way, this isn't a negative comment on anyone else's diy site. ------------------ ~*knightress*~ "the reward is the journey. make the most of it." Even if a DIY doesn't meet my expectations and I don't order something from them, I still appreciate and applaud them for trying to put their products out on the market. Because if you never try, then you'll never succeed, right? As for crea8iv creations - Julie was one of the forerunners in the teen online DIY scene, and so she deserves a lot of credit, not criticism. I find her products to be top quality and she is talented at what she does. I think that once the Laundromatic store is up and running, it should cut down on a lot of the craziness that comes along with having ten different DIY sites run by ten different people. It'll consolidate everything to one site, and we can all just go there to support our local starving artists ------------------ what a girl wants, what a girl needs: cornices and moguls! ris@ebay - http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/spootster/ ris@laundro - https://laundromatic.j0e.us/cgi-bin/laundro.cgi?justdisp&Ris IP: Logged |

Oh my, do I ever agree. I used to be excited when I heard of a new DIY site b/c it was, as someone mentioned, an underground thing. Now they're all over the place and pretty much boasting the same thing. I've been working on a diy site with my friend for a while but we're not that anxious to launch it in light of some of these...ahem..diy sites. And the thing is, we don't just make like envelopes and stuff, we've been making pants, cuffs, shirts, spiked collars, dresses, etc. for a while now and perfecting them before we try and sell them to the general public. The shit we make is like stuff I've never seen before and I know we could get far with it but it seems like the whole scene has been ruined. Sigh...isn't it the story of my life though? The punk scene's shot to hell- for now at least...------------------ *hey there...I used to be SuperPunk* !VIVA LA MULLET!

Hey. Don't dis Julie. As far as I know, she had one of the irst DIY sites that circulating through Laundro, and unline most of them - her products are unique, updated, have samples, etc. She works really hard on it and everything is wonderful.I don't like DIY sites because they all look the same, but not Julie's. She's the only one I've ever ordered from -- and ever will, until the laundro store is up, of course. IP: Logged |

i didn't mean to insult her or anything, but i dont think her products are that unique. maybe its just me who thinks that, but i think her stuff is creative and all, its just i dont think i would want to pay for some of that stuff. i could make that easily on my own for free. i guess thats what diy is all about, and i probably have high standards. when i think diy i think really creative things, things that take more time and effort than just gluing some stuff on a headband or something and selling it for 1.99. dont mean to insult, dont take it offensivly, please. just my opinion. ------------------ i am not daft, i am insane. DIY was pretty 'cool'..cause it was all original, unique things. i just think that some "do-it-yourself-ers" have to think a lot over before they actually "do"...like i think that some of those DIY sites do have potential and so do the girls, but sometimes it gets too rushed into, and the 'products' aren't too great of quality, or basically just something anyone can do themselves. to me, what makes DIY what it is, is the uniqueness and individuality..cause i mean, i think that since it requires a tiny bit more thinking to construct something other than the plain ole ad envelope deal...in the end, it's worth all the time + thinking + ideas because you can then differentiate yourself from the "others"=]..just my opinion, guys.------------------ X manda X

Since I have a chunk of time here, I will express my thoughts on this-I think that the GOOD DIY sites are the ones that offer things I couldn't easily make myself, such as silk-screened shirts, messanger bags, clothes, etc., not those that spray paint some paper and call it stationary. DIY started out with people making stuff for themselves, DO IT YOURSELF, not for profit. DIY pretty much defeats its OWN purpose: Someone else is doing it for you anyway, so basically you are just in it for the novelty. twogirlgarage.com is the only place I order from unless they have beads I don't have, because they make kick ass hoodies and stuff, not just like, pushpins, stationary, and crappy stuff. OK, shoot me now. IP: Logged | |
