I've read zines off and on for the past four years, and I don't think that there's necessarily a "right" way to do it, just as long as you don't do a zine just for the sake of having one... ya know?I saw Athena posting about on the boards here - she'd be a great person to talk to about everything DIY and zine. ------------------ what a girl wants, what a girl needs: cornices and moguls! ris, i was so surprised that you mentioned me, then i looked at your info, and lo and behold, you're a fellow asian girl zinester but anyway--sarah, as ris said, there isn't a "right" way to do a zine. if you can write (or know a lot of people who can and want to write for you) you can do a zine.. there are lots of ways to do layout, you should check out zines to see what you find aesthetically pleasing. i have a bunch of zine links on my site, several of which have pointers on first-time zinesters, so those might help: http://www.nodeadtrees.com/ezines/geekgirl/links/index.html#zines and if you want to know anything specific, ask! i can't help out with copying stuff, though, cuz i've never copied my zine myself. Athena - well, I don't do my own zine (I've tried, but nothing ever really worked out for me) but I *have* read an issue of Breakfast ------------------ what a girl wants, what a girl needs: cornices and moguls! IP: Logged |

the best way to get into zines is to read alot of zines out there. the best way to do this is to order from a distro. these zines have been carefully chosen, and are the best of the best. visit the bubble blow perzine distro at http://creamsicle.thesindicate.com to get started, and if you want email me for suggestions on what i like.------------------ xox-brooke http://creamsicle.thesindicate.com https://laundromatic.j0e.us/cgi-bin/laundro.cgi?justdisp&Wishingwell IP: Logged |

ris, you sent me a newsletter type thingy you did once, though. i can't remember what it was called--something beginning with an e? and sarah, pander zine distro (http://www.panderzinedistro.com) is also a good place to start. and i've never ordered from creamsicle, but i'm sure brooke has some pretty good zines too. lol you should see the first issues of ovrkill. you always like the next one more than the last. i recommend going to an independent bookstore (that stocks zines mind you) and pick up a grip of em. sometimes, if there's a free shelf, there'll be some free ones for the taking. you could visit my zine's site at http://www.shemadethis.com/ovrkill and order a copy if you want, or just send a stamp to the address posted there and i'll send you the a jan/feb issue cuz we still have tons!~elaine ------------------ Win your own customized webpage! Oh my...doing an offline zine is very addicting. I'd say definately go for it if you have the time and energy. There's no feeling like the one you get when you hold that first copy in your hands. My zine is sort of on hold for now, my mother(the evil tyrant)found a copy of Gone For Day Dog(my friends and my zine) and has forbidden me from using our copy machine to copy further issues. Grr. If anyone's interested, I still have some copies of issue one, e-mail me for the address. Yeah, that got off subject. If you have any questions you need answered about making your zine, feel free to e-mail me or post on here. I know that I'd be happy to help and that there are some zinesters on here who would be too. And good luck! ------------------ *hey there...I used to be SuperPunk* !VIVA LA MULLET!

i have made countless zines in the past two years...all you need are these simple household supplies:
- glue stick
- scissors
- magazine clippings
- paper to write your articles, poetry, etc. on
- coffee or coke to keep you buzzing at 3:30am
- quarters for photocopying
- a LOT of stamps
- PATIENCE
- PERSISTENCE
now just start cutting and pasting, and stirring up interest on various boards about your zine and you will be set. oh, one last thing, the best way to get people to get ahold of your zine is to NOT be afraid of posting your address all over the place. if you are afriad of internet stalkers, etc., your zine will have a MUCH harder time getting around. ------------------ envy.nu/acid --> personal page laundromatic.j0e.us/cgi-bin/laundro.cgi?justdisp&Candyacid --> laundro page joe@j0e.us --> contact me IP: Logged |

Not a problem. I was once too a zine newbie, and now look at me! heh.Anyway, you can either tape it up [so it cannot open] and send it like a magazine [but you have to use the back page as a mailing label kind of... address the back page like an envelope, put the stamp on it, etc.] or else put it in an envelope [bought or homemade] and send it. ------------------ envy.nu/acid --> personal page laundromatic.j0e.us/cgi-bin/laundro.cgi?justdisp&Candyacid --> laundro page joe@j0e.us --> contact me IP: Logged |

hehe... here's another confiscated zine story. i brought a copy of "the dangerously quiet loner" (done by madhu; athena, do you know her?) to school when i was a freshman and read an excerpt to my english class, who thought it was cool. i lent it to someone to read through, who lost it in the cafeteria. our anal dean of students got ahold of it and saw my address on it, and i got in trouble because of its "questionable material" (there were articles about abortion and strong language... *sigh*) i'll never forget that. i was scared out of my mind (anonymous freshman vs. the dean!) and it's just interesting to see how i'd react these days.------------------ what a girl wants, what a girl needs: cornices and moguls! sending zines: i used to make the back cover of mine a mailer (you know, all laid out like the front of an envelope, with my address in the corner and a space for writing the sendee's address) but i don't really like it when zines are sent to me that way (especially staples) so now i send them in reused envelopes.ris, do you mean madhu who did the zine totally? or is there another one.. if it's the one i mentioned, i do know who she is and she got in touch with me about my asian girl zinesters listing; i think i printed her info in the last one. sarah: if you're reading this, i thought i'd let you know that i haven't gotten your money yet, but will let you know as soon as i do. zines are in black and white, because they are usually photocopied or printed in black and white (color is expensive). 99% of the time when they are in color, they are just called magazines.[This message has been edited by athena (edited 05-09-2000).] IP: Logged |

occasionally a zinester will splurge on a color cover, or even 100% color (as in bathtub #4), and some art zines are in color. but yeah, it's hella expensive so you won't see many zines in color.------------------ my pitas pander zine distro IP: Logged |
